About

Lumbar Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injection

A lumbar transforaminal epidural steroid injection (TFESI) is a procedure used to alleviate lower back pain and leg pain caused by conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or radiculopathy (pinched nerves). During the procedure, a combination of a corticosteroid (anti-inflammatory medication) and a local anesthetic is injected directly into the epidural space around the affected spinal nerve root.

The transforaminal approach involves injecting the medication into the neuroforamen, which are the openings on the sides of the spinal canal through which spinal nerves exit. By delivering the medication directly to the site where the nerve root is being compressed or irritated, TFESI aims to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain.

TFESI is typically performed under fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance to ensure accurate needle placement. It is considered a minimally invasive procedure and is usually done on an outpatient basis. The effects of the steroid injection may take a few days to fully kick in, and the duration of pain relief varies from person to person.

TFESI can be part of a comprehensive treatment plan for managing lower back and leg pain, often used when conservative treatments such as physical therapy, medications, and activity modification have not provided sufficient relief. As with any medical procedure, TFESI carries risks and potential complications, so it's essential to discuss the potential benefits and risks with a qualified healthcare provider before undergoing the procedure.
