Lumbar Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injection
A lumbar transforaminal epidural steroid injection (TFESI) is a procedure used to alleviate lower back pain and leg pain caused by conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or radiculopathy (pinched nerves). During the procedure, a combination of a corticosteroid (anti-inflammatory medication) and a local anesthetic is injected directly into the epidural space around the affected spinal nerve root.
The transforaminal approach involves injecting the medication into the neuroforamen, which are the openings on the sides of the spinal canal through which spinal nerves exit.
